Mausoleum of Sheikh Khovendi Tahur in Tashkent
The memorial complex of Sheikh Khovendi Tahur (Sheihantaur) is located in the very heart of Tashkent, not far from Tashkent City park and Mustakillik Square. The ensemble is a small corner of ancient architecture, lost among the modern buildings of the metropolis.
Walking around the complex
The architectural ensemble consists of several structures: the mausoleums of Sheikh Khovendi Tahur, Kaldyrgach-biy, and Yunus Khan. The most famous of them is the first one. The building was constructed in the 15th century (according to other sources — at the end of the previous century). Sheikh Khovendi Tahur, known as the patron of Tashkent, is buried here.
The initiator of the mausoleum's construction was Amir Temur. According to legend, another famous commander was also associated with this place. Tradition says that the complex was erected in the area of a grove that appeared on the spot where a few drops of water fell from the helmet of Alexander the Great. Interestingly, a petrified tree, which is believed to have grown here during the construction of the building, has been preserved inside the mausoleum.
In the past, the memorial ensemble included 16 tombs, but only three of them have survived to our days.
Entrance to the complex is free. Even a budget tourist can include this object in their list of must-visit sights in Tashkent. You can continue walking around this area by visiting Navruz Park or Kukeldash Madrasah.
