Registan Square
Registan Square with its three majestic madrasahs is a true hallmark of Uzbekistan. The architectural ensemble is located in the central part of the city. If you decide to come here during the day, you can look at the ancient architectural monuments. In the evening, bright light shows are held here.
Registan: from an ancient bazaar to the main attraction of Samarkand
In the past, during the time of Amir Timur, the main city bazaar was located on the site of the modern Registan Square. The main roads of the city converged here. The houses of wealthy citizens were built in this same area. The name "Registan" means "a place of sand" or "a sandy place".
Over time, three massive buildings for educational institutions were built here — the Ulugbek Madrasah, the Sherdor Madrasah, and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah. Today, shops and small exhibition halls are located on the territory of these structures. Travelers can go inside each madrasah and take amazing photos.
Entrance to the territory of Registan Square is paid. Ticket offices are located in the western part of the complex. If you have already been here or simply do not want to go inside, you can admire the architectural ensemble from the free observation deck in front of the square. The light show will also be clearly visible from here.
From Registan, it is easy to walk to other interesting sights of the city — the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum or, for example, the Bibi-Khanym mosque.
