The Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Opera and Ballet is located in the central part of Tashkent. The theater is interesting not only for its productions, but also for the building itself in which it is located. The building was built according to the project of the famous architect Alexey Viktorovich Shchusev — the author of the projects of the Kazansky Railway Station and Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow.

History of the theater building

The troupe of the Alisher Navoi Theater traces its history back to the State Uzbek Concert and Ethnographic Ensemble, founded in 1926. The transformation of the ensemble into a theater took place in 1939.

The theater building was built in 1948. The following year, the architect Shchusev received the USSR State Prize for his project. Motifs of traditional Uzbek architecture were used in the design of the building, and local craftsmen were engaged in decorating the facades. The labor of Japanese prisoners of war was used in the construction. Today, a memorial plaque reminds of this fact.
