If you come to Tashkent as a tourist, then most likely you will have to use public transport or a taxi: some sights are located far from the city center. It is not so easy to walk there, especially when you are planning a trip during the scorching summer heat.
There are several ways to get around Tashkent: you can plan your route around the city by metro, bus, minibus, or taxi. And if you are going to the mountains, it will be convenient to reach some natural locations by commuter train.
Tashkent Metro — a museum underground
The Tashkent Metro is a fast, convenient, and inexpensive way to travel around the Uzbek capital. There are four metro lines and 50 stations in the city. One of the lines is elevated; transfers to the underground are available at its first and last stations.
Now, in May 2026, the fare for the metro is fixed: you pay the amount for a trip and can go anywhere in the city at this rate. Not so long ago, information appeared in the media that from January 2027 the situation will change: the fare will vary depending on the distance and the number of stations.
The metro fare depends on the chosen payment method. The most expensive option (3 000 soums) is a paper QR ticket for one trip. It can be purchased at ticket offices or through specialized terminals. Also, payment in the underground is available with an ATTO transport card (a standard card costs 20 000 soums), contactless international and local bank cards, and in mobile applications of banks and payment services. In this case, the fare will be 1 700 soums.
There are also travel cards in the city with a limited validity period. A single travel card for bus and metro for one day will cost 7 000 soums. A card for a week will cost 34 000 soums. Transport cards are sold at metro ticket offices and UzPost post offices.
Interestingly, a project to pay for fares using facial recognition or palm scanning technologies is currently developing in the Tashkent metro. However, if you come here as a tourist, you will most likely not need to spend time setting up these options.
To plan routes around the city, it is convenient to use the "Yandex Maps", "2GIS", and "Yandex Metro" applications. To check the balance of a transport card, you can download the "ATTO" application.
It is worth noting separately that the Tashkent Metro has long become one of the city's attractions: some stations of the underground system look very beautiful. At the same time, you can find mentions on the Internet that in the past it was impossible to take pictures at metro stations. Now the situation has changed, and you can safely take some unusual photos here.
Ground transport: buses and minibuses
There is an extensive network of bus routes in Tashkent. Modern electric buses with air conditioning and USB chargers run around the city. You can plan a trip, as in the case of the metro, in the "Yandex Maps", "2GIS", and "Yandex Metro" applications. The fare is also no different from the underground. However, there is one paradox — if you want to buy a transport card for a certain period only for the bus, it will cost more than the "Bus + Metro" card.
There are route taxis (minibuses) in the city, but they might be suitable for tourists only in specific cases when it is inconvenient to use other types of transport. There is not much space in minibuses, and often they do not have a strict schedule.
Taxi in Tashkent: apps vs "Curb"
Several taxi services operate in Tashkent: Yandex Go, MyTaxi, Uklon, WB Taxi. The prices are quite affordable. You can pay for the ride in cash or with international and local bank cards.
There are several tariffs in taxis: starting from "economy" to "premium". The level of service and car changes accordingly. In hot weather, it is better to pay a little more and choose a more expensive tariff, since entry-level tariffs often have no air conditioning or it is broken.
In addition to official taxi services, private drivers operate in the city. They can be found, for example, at the exit from the airport. According to tourists, the price tags of such taxi drivers are often highly inflated, although it is possible to bargain here. Another category is taxis to the mountains or neighboring cities to Tashkent. Such cars can be found, for example, near the "Buyuk Ipak Yuli" metro station. Passengers can pay for the whole car entirely or wait for fellow travelers and share the cost with them.
Commuter trains to the mountains
There is no large number of commuter train routes in Tashkent. But if you, for example, want to go towards the Charvak reservoir and save on travel, you can go there by railway.
Commuter trains run strictly on schedule, which can be found on the information portal of Tashkent transport. In the case of the direction to Charvak (as locals call the reservoir), travelers have the opportunity to choose regular trains or expresses. The terminal station of this route is called "Hojikent".
